Chapter 20

Isabella

“Then why the hell are you smiling like that?”

What is she talking about?

“What do you mean? I was just texting a friend.”

“Does your boyfriend know you are texting someone else?”

I rolled my eyes when I heard “boyfriend.”

“It’s a girl.”

“Oh. I support you hundred percent, Izzie,” she laughed.

“What?” she ignored me and started walking away.

And then I just realized what she said.

“I’m not gay!” I shouted at her.

People looked at me, and I just gave them a peace sign.

“What do you want?” Cindy was still laughing at me. She is behind the counter.

“Are you going to cook it?” I asked

“Nope”

“Good. I will have a burger and fries” I smiled at her.

“And a strawberry shake.”

“You know I could spit on your shake, right?”

I gave her a disgusting look.

“It must have been a great first day for you.”

“I kind of like it, surprisingly,” she smiled.

I am just proud of her. She is trying to be independent to prove to mom that she can do it.

After a few minutes, Maddie came with my order.

“Did you really spit on this?”

“It still tastes the same,” she grinned at me.

“Does mom knows you work here?”

She shook her head, no.

“I told dad, though. Maybe he already mentioned it to her”

“What about college, Mads?”

She took a deep breath.

“I will pay my own tuition with my own money, so I can go to a college that I really want.”

I stared at her with pity. I know it is not right, but I can’t help to feel sorry for her.

“She wants me to be a doctor when she knows I love painting.”

“You do?” I was surprised.

“Yeah”

“How come I don’t know about this?”

“Because I never told it to anyone. I just told her because I wanted her to understand me and not force me into something that I am not passionate about.”

I feel guilty that I am only hearing this now.

“Where are your paintings?”

She smiled at me.

“If you wait until my shift is over, maybe I will show it to you.”

“I am here all night.”

I called my dad that Maddie and I would be late. I am excited that I will get to see her works.

“So, where are we going?”

“Home,” she said.

“What? I thought you are going to show me your paintings.”

“Yeah. So we are going home. Drive”

Oh, I get it. The paintings are in her room. But I didn’t see anything when it was renovated.

After a few minutes, we arrived at our house. I was about to go to the door when she pulled me.

“What?!” I asked her.

“Shut up. Mom might hear us.”

“What the hell are you doing?”

“Just follow me, okay?”

She went to Mitchell’s backyard.

“What are we doing here, Mads?”

She didn’t answer me. She pulled a key out of her pocket.

“Why do you have a key at their house?”

She ignored me.

“Okay, I am not going in until you tell me what is going on.”

She rolled her eyes at me.

“I will tell you everything later. Just follow me, okay?”

I just did what she told me. We went straight to the basement. Once she turned on the lights, I saw all her paintings.
